Macedonian Front 1918

The First World War in the Balkans has been overshadowed by the other theaters of the Great War and does not attract the attention of historians and other experts that it deserves. However, the battlefields Macedonian Front played an important role in the development of European history and should not be neglected. The Macedonian front is interesting because it was the perhaps the most diverse front in terms of participants on both sides.

The fabulous tour to the quiet and untouched area of northern Greece will take you to the battlefields of some of the best preserved from the First World War. The scenic backdrop will never be forgotten: spectacular hills and mountains, the picturesque lake Doiran. The battlefields on the Salonica front offer a great insight into the conditions which the men on both sides withstood. After an initial overview of the campaign we visit the Allied cemeteries in Thessaloniki. Then we leave Thessaloniki and travel to the battlefield of Dobro Polje, at a height of 2,000m. The battle of Dobro Polje is a very defining moment for the Salonica Front as it was the very first in a series of events that led to the end of World War I. The battle there broke the long-standing deadlock in the Balkans. The next battlefield we visit is Skra di Legen where the Greek forces in spring 1918 launched a successful offensive against the fortified area. Finally we follow the battles of the British and Greek forces around the lake Doiran.
