Victor Davis Hanson pointed out, that our present-day notion of Western discipline marching in time, advancing and retreating on command, preservation of formation, and mutual protection within files and ranks—started with the Greek phalanx. The ancient Greeks developed a style of warfare that has been passed down through the centuries and serves as the forefather of today’s Western military. The Greeks with their heavily armored phalanges have invented their own style of warfare, sometime between 700 BC and 450 BC, completely unique to the west that followed a strict code of principles.

Our tour lasts two days, each day returning to Syntagma, allowing for a quick overview of the Western Way of War. In the first day we survey the battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas last stand with his 300 Spartans and the battle of Plataea, the decisive battle of the Persian Wars. Next day, we survey another two battles, at Leuctra where Epaminondas employed his famous ‘oblique order’ and the battle of Chaeronea in which of Chaeronea in which Philipp II defeated and united the Greek city-states.
